Welcome to Southside Middle School, the home of the Panthers!

Southside is home to 575 students and 46 teachers in grades 6, 7, and 8, and is housed in one of the finest middle school facilities in the state of Indiana. Our school has a diverse student population, which is 66 percent Caucasian-American, 18 percent African American, and 16 percent Asian, Latino, or Multi-Racial. Southside operates on a traditional seven-period day, and we start each day with a 30-minute Success period, in keeping with our commitment to the 8-Step Process for Continuous School Improvement.  Southside offers a curriculum focused on preparing students to be successful in high school with a wide range of courses including honors, special education, a variety of electives, and classes in which students can earn high school credit. We also provide a broad spectrum of extracurricular opportunities including choir, band, drama, and athletics.

We have high expectations for all of our students and staff, and we will do everything we can to support our students and families as they progress through their academic career. We utilize Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and our SWAGGER (Students Who Achieve Good Grades Earn Rewards) program to promote and recognize the many great things that our students do every day. As nearly 90 percent of our student population is in the free or reduced lunch program, we have programs to support students and families in need, including our Panther Pantry, food backpacks for the weekend, and our monthly food give away. Southside also collaborates with a variety of community organizations, including our partnership with Ball State University as a Professional Development School.

Here at Southside, we are proud of all that our students, staff, and community are doing to make this an excellent school, and we invite all students and families looking for outstanding middle school opportunities to come and learn what it means to be a SMS Panther!

In order to ensure student safety prior to school starting, we are asking that students not arrive until 8:40AM.  At that time, doors will open and students will be able to enter the building.  However, prior to 8:40AM there is not any student supervision.  Thank you for your help and cooperation pertaining to this matter.
