STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics
The 6th Grade Honors students have an opportunity to participate in the STEM Program. Students have an integrated two hour block for Math and Science classes. Students participate in hands-on activities such as growing vegetables in the greenhouse, creating a catapult, and recreating the Mars Rover after planning and calculating the total budget.
Honors classes are offered for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in the core classes of Math, English, Science, and Social Studies. Teachers in these subject areas work collaboratively to create lessons/units that are relevant to the students and cover all standards in the core subject. Our students worked with elementary students to provide an additional hands-on learning experience for all of those involved. 6th Grade Honors students received Chromebooks to use in class and to use for all assignments.
We feature 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Concert band. Our 7th and 8th grade band participates in the Central High School Summer Band Program who participates in the State Fair Band Competition. They perform with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra at our local Martin Luther King Celebration. They participate in many band concerts and always score an outstanding rating in the ISSMA. We have a Band-O-Rama every spring that showcases the corporation bands at all levels.
This group received 5 Gold Stars at the ISSMA competition in January of 2017.
SWAGGER (Students Who Achieve Good Grades Earn Respect)
An alternative approach to reach those students with academic and/or behavior concerns. These students receive the same core instruction based on standards just like the rest of the student body. It has a more focused character education curriculum and instruction in Math and English based on individual needs. Our program won the Muncie Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Contribution to Education Award in November of 2016.
Mayor Dennis Tyler visited our SWAGGER Program to speak with the students.
Meet The Sheriff Program
We are linking multiple resources in an attempt to positively impact the students at Southside Middle School. Sheriff Dudley will be spearheading the Meet the Sheriff Program and has volunteered his time, guidance and services to a selected group of students and their parents/guardians. His vision has long term ramifications that could run through high school which could lead to a possible employment opportunities in the future.
